Chronic pain can be isolating. You may feel you’re the only one who understands what you’re going through. You may also feel lonely and hopeless.

Finally, chronic pain can be unpredictable. It’s difficult to plan for the future or even just get through the day. You may feel you’re constantly living in uncertainty and fear.

Any of all the above can be a major source of stress in your life.

But it’s important to remember that you’re not your chronic pain.

You’re so much more than that.

How do I love myself with a chronic illness?

Constant pain, fatigue, and cognitive impairment can make it hard to feel good about yourself.

You’re still the same person–just with a little extra baggage.

Focus on the things you can do, rather than the things you can’t. 

Here are some tips for how to feel the love:

Start by accepting yourself. You don’t have to like your chronic illness. But acknowledging that it’s a part of your life will help.

Focus on your positive qualities. We all have things that make us unique. Write a list of things you love about yourself–including physical, mental, and emotional qualities.

Make time for things you enjoy. When you’re dealing with a chronic illness, it’s easy to get bogged down in the negative.

Schedule time for activities that make you happy. Read a book. Spend time with friends and family, or listen to your favorite music.

Talk to someone who understands. It’s helpful to talk to someone who has been through a similar experience. They can offer support, advice, and understanding.

If you don’t know anyone with a chronic illness, there are plenty of online support groups that you can join.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of this. Read the above sentence again.

Our culture has embedded the idea that hard work = success. This belief is so deep, it often becomes our truth without us even knowing it.

What you end up doing is pushing yourself through the searing pain. You tell yourself it’ll be worth it in the end.

However, you’re like a boat in a stormy sea.

You’re fighting against the waves, trying to keep yourself afloat.

The wind is howling, and the rain is beating down on you. But you don’t give up.

You keep pushing, even though it’s hard as hell, and it hurts.

This is what it’s like to love yourself when you’re in constant pain. It’s difficult.

But it is possible to be happy with chronic pain.

Here are a few things you can do right now to start the journey of self-love:

Challenge the negative thoughts and beliefs you have about yourself. These negative thoughts are likely what’s holding you back.

What are some things you love about yourself?

Why not focus on these instead of your pain?

Make a list of things you’re grateful for. When you see all the good in your life, it’ll be easier to love yourself.

Practice self-care. This can be anything from taking a relaxing bubble bath to getting a Swedish massage. Do whatever makes you feel good!

Learning to love yourself with chronic pain is a journey, but it’s one that is so worth taking.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of beating yourself up for not being “perfect.” But remember that there’s no such thing as perfect for our bodies.

We all have imperfections, and that’s what makes us special.
