You can’t do the things you used to do because it’s just too painful. Everyday activities are a struggle and even simple things like getting dressed can be exhausting. You feel you’re constantly fighting against your chronic pain, and sometimes it feels like you’re losing.
But what if there was a way to use your chronic pain to your advantage? What if you could use it as a tool to help you create the life you want?
Enter Human Design.
In this post, I’ll uncover how to use your human design body graph to manage chronic pain.
You’ll learn about a few of the human design energy centers and how they work, as well as how to take additional steps based on your individual chart.
I’ll conclude by sharing some best tips for using some of the human design energy centers so you can learn to use your chronic pain as a tool rather than a hindrance.
But before we get into it, I’d like to define chronic pain and some of its symptoms.
What is chronic pain?
It’s possible that pain can occur at any age, but chronic pain lasts longer and chronic symptoms can last several months. When someone is experiencing pain daily, it can lead to a lower level of self-esteem, depression, and anger. People who suffer from chronic pain often have difficulty sleeping and concentrating.
What are some symptoms of chronic pain?
There are many chronic pain symptoms that can vary depending on the person. But some common symptoms include:
– dull or aching pain that doesn’t go away
– sharp or shooting pain
– pain that gets worse with movement
– pain that interferes with sleep
– anxiety or depression
Now that we’ve gone over what chronic pain is and some of its symptoms, let’s talk about how your Human Design chart can help you manage it.
What is human design and how can it help chronic pain sufferers specifically?
What is human design?
Human design is a system that can help people to understand their unique personalities and how they interact with the world. The system is based on the principle that everyone has a unique energy signature that’s determined by their birth date, time, and place.
This energy signature can gain insights into a person’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as their likes and dislikes.
Human design can also help people make better decisions about their lives, including what career to pursue, what relationships to maintain, and how to live a more fulfilling life.
For chronic pain sufferers, human design can be an incredibly valuable tool because the system can help them understand their pain triggers and how to best manage their pain.
Understand your energy centers and how they work
You’re a spiritual being composed of energy that flows through your body in specific patterns. This energy gives you life and vitality, and it also determines your unique characteristics and traits. There are seven major energy centers in the human body, known as chakras.
Each chakra handles a different aspect of your being, and they all work together to create a balanced and harmonious whole.
When one or more of your chakras are out of alignment, it can lead to physical, emotional, and mental imbalances. The good news is that there are many ways to bring your chakras back into alignment. One of the most effective methods is to understand how they work and how they interact with the other energy centers in your body.
Use your energy centers to your advantage
One component making up human design is the Hindu chakra centers. Our energy centers, or chakras, handle our overall health and well-being. The seven chakras are associated with a unique area of the body and govern specific functions. For example, the root chakra is responsible for our sense of safety and security, while the sacral chakra governs our creative energy and passion.
By focusing on each chakra, we can clear away any blockages that may prevent us from achieving our full potential.
Take additional steps based on your individual body graph
As someone with a human design generator type, for example, you’re wired a certain way and thrive when you live in alignment with your natural inclinations. However, there may be times when you need to take additional steps to care for yourself, based on your individual human design chart.
For example, if you’re someone who is highly sensitive, you may need to limit your exposure to loud noise and bright lights. Or, if you overwork yourself, you may need to schedule breaks throughout the day and get enough rest at night. By taking these extra steps, you can help ensure that you are living in accordance with your human design and thriving in all areas of life.
How to read your human design body graph
If you’re new to human design, the best way to start is by understanding your energy centers. Each of the nine energy centers is responsible for a different aspect of your being, and they all work together to create a balanced and harmonious whole.
Once you know which energy centers are most important for you, you can focus on them and work on bringing them into alignment.
Understand the different energy centers
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 50 million adults in the United States suffer from chronic pain. This pain can have a tremendous impact on every aspect of a person’s life, including their ability to work, interact with family and friends, and even get a good night’s sleep.
When trying to understand chronic pain from a human design perspective, it’s helpful to think about the different design centers that are involved. Understanding the meaning of each type of center, your strategy, and your authority can be key to managing pain.
Pay attention to your personality and design sun and earth gates
Design Sun and Earth gates are likely the most important factors in the human design body graph because their energies make up about 70% of the chart. The Sun gate represents our personality and how we project ourselves to the world. The Earth gate represents our innermost selves, the core of who we are and what grounds us.
By understanding these four gates, you can better understand yourself and others. The Sun and Earth Gates can help you make better decisions in life, as they provide guidance on your true path. When you’re able to align your Sun and Earth Gates, you’re able to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.
Look at your human design body graph as a whole
The human body is an amazing machine, and each part plays an important role in keeping us alive and healthy. However, the body is also remarkably complex, with many systems working together to keep us functioning. This complexity can make it difficult to understand how the body works and why certain diseases occur.
Looking at the human design body graph can help to provide insights into the workings of the body and the interrelationships between its various systems. For example, looking at the chart can help to explain how a problem in one system can cause problems in another. In addition, the body graph can help to highlight potential areas of weakness that may be susceptible to disease.
The different human design energy centers and what they mean for chronic pain sufferers
The human design centers consider the whole person, not just a symptom or a disease. This is important because it allows for a more holistic approach to treatment. It also means that each person’s chart is unique, as each individual has a unique combination of energy centers.
As there are nine human design centers, I’ll only discuss the Sacral, Ajna and Will centers in this post to give you a better understanding of how they may be involved in chronic pain.
The Sacral Center
The sacral center is in the pelvis and is rich in nerve endings, which makes it especially sensitive to pain signals, and contains several key muscles and ligaments that support the spine and pelvis. It’s also responsible for regulating blood flow to the pelvic region. Restricted blood flow can cause pain and inflammation.
Using the sacral center for personal gain
The sacral center handles our emotional and sexual energy. When it’s in balance, we experience feelings of pleasure, creativity, and fertility. However, when it’s out of balance, we may experience feelings of anxiety, depression, or sexual dysfunction.
One danger of using the sacral center for personal gain is that it can lead to an imbalance in our emotional and sexual energy. When we become fixated on achieving a certain goal or result, we can lose sight of our own needs and desires, resulting in feelings of frustration and resentment.
Using the sacral center in place of emotions
The sacral center is also responsible for our emotions and is associated with the element of water. When we’re able to process and express our emotions healthily, we’re able to maintain a sense of balance in our lives. However, when we stuff down our emotions or try to ignore them, they can come out in other ways, such as through chronic pain.
Not knowing when enough is enough
The not-self theme of the open or undefined sacral is the difficulty to know when enough is enough because it’s connected with pleasure and desires. When we’re in balance, we’re able to enjoy our pleasures without becoming fixated on them. However, when we’re out of balance, we may constantly chase after new pleasures without ever really finding satisfaction.
The Ajna Center
The ajna center is between the eyebrows and is associated with the element of fire. It’s responsible for our ability to see clearly, both physically and metaphysically, for our intuition and insight. When it’s out of balance, we may find ourselves caught up in our own beliefs and opinions without ever really seeing the truth.
One challenge of the ajna center is that it’s difficult to know when we’re out of balance because the ajna is associated with our intuition and insight. When we’re in balance, we’re able to trust our intuition and follow our own inner guidance.
When the ajna center is used to control others
The danger of using the ajna center is that it can control others because the ajna is associated with our ability to see clearly.
When we’re in balance, we’re able to see both sides of every situation and decide based on what’s best for everyone involved. However, when we’re out of balance, we may use our intuition and insight to manipulate others into doing what we want them to do.
When the ajna center is used in place of emotions
Another danger of using the ajna center is that we can use it in place of our emotions. When we’re in balance, we’re able to process and express our emotions healthily. However, when we’re out of balance, we may use our intuition and insight to figure out what other people are feeling instead of dealing with our own emotions.
Trying to prove that you’re certain
The not-self theme of an undefined or open ajna is trying to prove that you’re certain. It manifests as a need to be right, always needing to have the last word, or feeling the need to defend your point of view. This can lead to arguments and conflict, both with others and with yourself.
The Will Center
The will center is the center of human design responsible for willpower. When it’s out of balance, we may struggle to stay on track with our goals or feel like we’re constantly fighting an uphill battle.
One challenge of the will center is that it’s difficult to know when we’re out of balance as we associate the will center with our ability to stay on track with our goals.
When the will center replaces emotions
A danger of using the will center is that we can use it in place of our emotions. When we’re in balance, we’re able to process and express our emotions healthily. However, when we’re out of balance, we may use our willpower to control our emotions instead of dealing with them beneficially.
Trying to prove your worth to yourself and others
The not-self theme of an undefined or open will center is trying to prove your worth to yourself and others. It manifests as a need to be perfect, always needing to be in control, or feeling like you have to do everything yourself. This can lead to perfectionism and burnout, both with yourself and with others.
The best way to use your energy centers to manage chronic pain
Alignment and balance are crucial when fighting chronic pain. Use your intuition and insight to make decisions, but also be aware of your emotions and take care of yourself.
Utilize your willpower to stay on track with your goals, but also remain flexible and take breaks when you need to. If you can find a balance between your human design centers, you’ll be in a much better position to manage your chronic pain.
Human design has changed my life and I’m so grateful that I found it. I continuously study my body graph to gain deeper insight and clarity into my true nature and my purpose in the world.
Consider some of the following ways to improve the functioning of your centers:
Use the sacral center to change what may not be fulfilling you in work and in your life
When the energy of the sacral center is out of balance, we may feel stuck, and unfulfilled by our work or relationships. If you are seeking to change your life, here are a few tips for using the sacral center to create more fulfillment:
1. Enhance your creativity. If you feel you’re stuck in a creative rut, try doing something new to jumpstart your creativity. Take a painting class, start a blog (this free blueprint from successful blogger Suzi Whitford is what I used to start my blog), or take up a new hobby.
2. Listen to your gut. If you feel you’re not sure which way to go, trust your gut and go with your intuition.
3. Connect with nature. Spend time near bodies of water, such as lakes, oceans, or rivers. Or, try activities that involve water, such as swimming, kayaking, or even just walking in the rain.
Use the ajna center to change your thoughts and perceptions about your chronic pain
The key to using the ajna center to change your thoughts and perceptions about your chronic pain is to understand how the mind-body connection works.
The brain, in response to input from the body, creates pain. The ajna center is also known as the third eye. It’s believed to be the seat of our consciousness and connection to the pineal gland, which regulates our sleep cycle.
Here are some tips on how to tap into your ajna center for chronic pain management:
1. Notice your thoughts and perceptions about your chronic pain. Are they helpful or harmful?
2. Challenge your negative thoughts and beliefs about your pain. What evidence do you have to support them?
3. Choose to focus on positive thoughts and beliefs about your pain.
Use the will center to stay true to yourself and your goals
If you struggle with your goals or comprising your time and energy with others, you may need to take some time to inspect your priorities and what truly matters to you.
Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the will center:
1. Set aside some time each day to check in with yourself and reflect on your goals. This can be first thing in the morning, before bed, or anytime that you have a few minutes to spare.
I pull out my journal in the morning and write a mini self-assessment of my previous day.
2. Use journaling prompts to help you explore your thoughts and feelings related to your goals. Writing your thoughts can help you clarify them and make your thoughts more concrete.
3. When you feel yourself veering off track, take a step back and reassess your goals. Make sure that they’re still in line with what you want to achieve.

Additional tips for living with chronic pain based on your human design body graph
If you’re living with chronic pain, there are a few additional things that you can do to help manage your condition, based on your human design chart. Here are some tips:
1. Get regular exercise. Exercise is important for everyone, but it’s especially important for those with chronic pain. Regular exercise can help to reduce pain and improve your overall health.
2. Eat a healthy diet. Eating a healthy diet can help to reduce inflammation and pain. Be sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats in your diet.
3. Get enough sleep. Sleep is important for healing and pain management. Be sure to get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
4. Find a support group. There are many support groups available for those living with chronic pain. Connecting with others who understand what you are going through can be supportive.
One of my favorite support groups I recommend to my clients is Beyond My Battle. They offer free online support and share inspiring stories of people living in chronic pain.
Sacral center tip:
If you find it difficult to trust your intuition or gut instinct, consider keeping a journal. Write your decision and the outcome. Over time, you will see patterns emerge.
Ajna center tip:
Try a guided meditation for chronic pain management. There are many options available online or through apps.
Will center tip:
Make a list of your goals and post it somewhere that you’ll see it every day. It can help to keep you motivated and on track.
